Introduction:
Recently, I have been working with Murray Edmunds, the songwriter behind Kylolus, on a charity record where we worked together to bring his poignant song ‘The Beacon Of Our Love’ to life. This record serves as a tribute to Murray’s close friend Dave and aims to honour his memory, while making a positive impact through music.
Remembering Dave:
Dave held a special place in Murray’s heart, and his tragic loss inspired Murray to express his emotions through music. ‘The Beacon Of Our Love’ is a touching testament to their friendship and will resonate with many people, for lots of different reasons.
Collaborative Process:
Arriving on day one, we talked about the song with regards to the musical style and the story behind the track. Murray had a strong melody and complete lyrics right from the get go and we changed almost nothing about these elements, right through to completion.
Piano and vocals plus guitars are part of the style of Kylolus and we stayed true to the sound. Production choices were made quickly and easily as to the direction of the track, which did, however, take a different route to the original concept! With the main instrumental elements recorded and a scratch vocal track added, we sent the files over to Steve Skidmore (Skidders Music) to add a beautiful guitar section to bring the song to its conclusion after the last chorus. I then performed the final vocal takes, and when all elements of production were complete, it was time to discuss Murray’s plans for the song.

Impact of the Charity Record:
Beyond the creative process, the charity record holds a greater purpose. The net proceeds from the song’s sales on Bandcamp are dedicated to two charities, ensuring that Dave’s legacy would continue to make a positive impact. The support from friends, fans and music enthusiasts will only add to the success of the project and further solidify the importance of using music as a force for good.
80% of net proceeds will go to Cancer Research CRUK with the remaining 20% to be donated to a project that was very important to Dave, Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group.
Conclusion:
Creating the track “The Beacon Of Our Love” allows Murray and others to pay tribute to the memory of his friend Dave, while spreading love and hope through music. It’s so great to be part of this project and I look forward to the continued songwriting of Murray and the growth of Kylolus on all music platforms.
